Too bad he was an atheist. God! He wanted this so badly – to be able to go in the church, find the priest and confess. He needed someone to say to him:
“My child, you are forgiven.”
This was not fair. This was cruel.
Too bad he was an atheist. Now it was all up to his conscience and no one knew better than him – the fucking bastard had no mercy.

There has been an offline comment on this story that made me think the way it's written makes it ambiguous in a way I didn't intend and don't exactly like. I will not edit the post. I'll just say some things about it.
The curse at the end goes to the man's conscience.
The biggest punishment is the one that eats inside.
I believe that anyone and anything can be forgiven. One just needs to want that. It might sound simple but it's not. It's a long process and it starts with the belief that at the end you could be given one simple gift - forgiveness. And one quality that people ascribe to God is mercy. I still think that believing in forgiveness is a blessing.
i like your post.
it is so true.
But i have to add that sometimes people do not search for forgiveness.
Some people just need an answer.
Mercy is not always the right thing, nor the always wanted thing.
Sometimes you just need an answer to end your own torment.
